Many of my thumbnails sketch ideas were too 'costume-y', or too practical, or too impractical for completing in a two week assignment, but not so much on the artful side of things. So the brainstorming session was essential. People were able to take some of my more complicated ideas and suggest interesting and manageable solutions. The one idea I decided to run with, in the top right corner of my thumbnail page, is the face shield.
The very first image in my mind for this one, thinking of weird eyewear, was of the crazy sun visor face shields that have become so popular in some asian countries, and are showing up more and more in North America:
I see these things and sometimes think that despite how crazy they look, it must be neat to be completely shielded from the public view while still in public. I thought it could be kind of nice to have some kind of protective eyewear/facewear that was designed to give me a reprieve from the public gaze. Something that felt calming on the inside - not at all designed for others, but solely for the wearer.
I also began thinking about inner self vs. the self we project into the world - on social media, in public with the use of clothing and makeup and hair products. Our 'image'(or mask), in other words. The two can be so different. One is put together, confident, perfect. The inner can be the complete opposite - insecure, tired, maybe in pain. It reminded me of a drawing project I did on wood panel and tracing paper - inner and outer layers - which reflects on these ideas:
So I thought of taking this idea a step further and creating a physical version of this mask - something I could actually wear.
I am still working out the concept. I think the face linework could be done using a vinyl wrap. The plastic visor will be the tricky part - heat form it somehow or use an existing visor as a base? I like the idea of creating the inner environment - a shield from the public - but this would likely require a second layer, maybe some LED lights for the inside, or some reflective material to give a feeling of space. But this might end up having to be 'phase II' at a later date, depending on time available.
